New York Metro is pleased to announce that we are organizing a scholarship fund on behalf of sister Flo. In lieu of sending flowers, we kindly ask you to make a donation to the Florence Summergrad Scholarship Fund.

Donations will be accepted via check or money order to NY Metro Area Postal Union with "Florence Summergrad Scholarship Donation" in the memo. For further information, contact the Union office.

Florence Summergrad

January 9, 1948 - February 23, 2024

Florence Summergrad passed peacefully with her friend Joseph Costigan by her side at the Jersey City Medical Center on Friday, February 23, 2024, in Jersey City, NJ at the age of 76.

Surviving to cherish Florence’s memory are her son, Jeremy Kohlor of Jersey City, NJ, her cousin, Dr. Paul Summergrad of Newton, MA, her sister-in-law, Mary Grace Summergrad of Needham, MA, and her nieces, Lisa Summergrad of Somerville, MA and Anna Summergrad of Waltham, MA.

Florence is preceded in her death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dr. Ruben Summergrad of Westchester County, NY and her brother, David Summergrad of Needham, MA.

Florence was born on January 9, 1948. She was a graduate of Glen Cove High School in Glen Cove, NY and completed her post-secondary education at Vassar College. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa Society. Florence loved beautiful flowers, and attended the Macy’s flower show every year. She loved watching football and was a diehard New York Yankee fan.

Florence dedicated 50 years of her career to the United States Postal Service-NDC in Jersey City, NJ. She was a clerk craft director for the American Postal Workers Union Local 10 and served on the executive board in Manhattan. Additionally, she was an award winning journalist and editor of the Union Mail magazine distributed to rank and file postal workers in the NY Metro Area.
